Group A, Session 1: Factors Necessary for Supporting Family Child Care: Survey and Moving to Action
In this session, teams will learn about research that identifies the factors necessary for supporting quality family child care. Teams will be provided with a conceptual model for measuring high-quality supports and factors that influence positive outcomes. A survey tool for assessing current services within FCC networks and collaborative partnerships will be shared to help determine the team’s focus and primary goals for the remainder of the learning group.
Juliet Bromer, Ph.D., is a research scientist at the Herr Research Center for Children and Social Policy at Erikson Institute in Chicago. Dr. Bromer’s research interests focus on workforce development and quality improvement in family child care settings, relationship-based approaches to professional development, family and community support roles of child care providers, and the role of family-provider relationships in early care and education. Her current research projects focus on quality improvement approaches in family child care. The Family Child Care Support Research Project is developing an assessment tool kit to examine the quality of support offered by agencies to family child care providers. Other research conducted by Dr. Bromer and colleagues is investigating approaches to supporting home-based child care in Philadelphia and working with local partners to develop collaborations and systems to support this sector of the early care and education workforce. Dr. Bromer also serves as an expert consultant to the Illinois Governor’s Office of Early Childhood and the Illinois Early Learning Council. In this role, she has helped the state to develop family child care and family and community engagement standards for Illinois’ new quality rating and improvement system. She received her M.S. in education from Bank Street College of Education and her Ph.D. in human development from the University of Chicago.
Looking into Family Child Care - a set of online learning modules, was designed for agency supervisors to use as a guide in training staff members to more deeply understand their work within the family child care setting and to more fully support family child care providers.
